Turn a piece over and look for a mark. Sterling, 925 or .925 means solid sterling silver, which is 92.5 percent pure. Marks like EP, EPNS, Silverplate or Quadruple Plate point to silver plate.
Plated pieces have only a thin layer of silver over another metal, so they carry very little metal value. If you're not sure what you have, bring it in and we'll test it.

Many of the silver sets we see in San Francisco come out of family homes in Nob Hill, Pacific Heights and the Richmond. Flatware sets are heavy, so if you're bringing a full chest, a rolling bag makes the walk from the garage easier.

Silver plate has very little metal value, so we generally don't. If you're unsure whether a piece is sterling, we'll test it for you.
Sterling knives usually have hollow handles filled with other material and stainless steel blades. Only the silver in the handle counts, and we account for that.
