You don't have to sort anything, but a quick look helps you know what to expect. Check clasps and the inside of rings for stamps. 10K, 14K, 18K, 417, 585 and 750 all mean gold. 925 or Sterling means silver. GP, GF or HGE mean gold-plated or gold-filled, which carry little metal value.
Leave stones in their settings and bring any boxes, receipts or certificates you have, especially for designer pieces and diamonds. Paperwork helps us assess them properly.

Costume jewelry has little resale value for us, but bring it anyway. Real pieces often hide in a pile of costume ones, and we'll point them out.
