Karat tells you how much of a piece is pure gold. 24K is essentially pure. 18K is 75 percent gold, 14K is about 58 percent, and 10K is about 42 percent. The rest is other metals added for strength and color.
That's why two chains of the same weight can be worth very different amounts. An 18K chain carries almost twice the gold of a 10K one. We confirm the karat by testing, because stamps wear off and occasionally don't match the metal. Today's market price is on our gold price page.
