US dimes, quarters and half dollars minted in 1964 or earlier are 90 percent silver. Kennedy half dollars from 1965 to 1970 are 40 percent silver. Nickels from 1942 to 1945 with a large mint mark above Monticello are 35 percent silver. Everything else in your pocket is copper and nickel.
Dealers call pre-1965 coins junk silver, which undersells them. They're bought for their silver content, so a coffee can of old quarters can add up to real money when silver prices are high.
