Before you sell gold, watch this

This San Francisco news segment is the one we point customers to before they sell anything. Its lesson is simple, and we agree with it: know what you have, and get more than one offer.

A checklist for a fair offer

  1. Know your karat

Look for the stamp: 10K or 417, 14K or 585, 18K or 750. It tells you how much of the piece is gold.

  2. Weigh it at home

A kitchen scale that reads grams gives you a ballpark before anyone else weighs it.

  3. Watch the scale

A buyer should weigh your items in front of you, with the reading where you can see it.

  4. Ask for the math

Weight, karat, spot price and the share of melt value being paid. A fair buyer tells you all four.

  5. Mind the unit

Grams and pennyweights are different. One pennyweight is 1.555 grams, so check which one a quote uses.

  6. Get a second opinion

Take the same items to another buyer. A fair offer holds up to comparison.

How we handle it at our counters

We test and weigh every piece in front of you, show you the numbers behind the offer, and there's never an obligation to sell. If you want a second opinion after visiting us, go and get one. We'd rather earn your business than rush it.
